Syllabus

Distances and stages for our swimming lesson programme. All delivered by ASA qualified instructors.

Distances

  • 5 Metre This distance can be completed using any method of movement.
  • 10 Metre This distance can be completed using any method of movement.
  • 25 Metre This distance can be completed using any method of movement.
  • 50 Metre This distance must be completed using a correct and recognised stroke.
  • 100 Metre This distance must be completed using a correct and recognised stroke.
  • 200 Metre This distance must be completed using a correct and recognised stroke.
  • 400 Metre This distance must be completed using a correct and recognised stroke.

Stages

Stage 1

A brief summary of the content of the award:

  • Enter the water safely
  • Move forwards 5m
  • Move backwards 5m
  • Move sideways 5m
  • Scoop the water and wash face
  • Be at ease with water showered over head
  • Perform floating position, help may be used
  • Stand up from horizontal position on back
  • Stand up from horizontal position on front
  • Push and glide horizontally
  • Demonstrate understanding of pool rules
  • Exit the water safely

Stage 2

A brief summary of the content of the award:

  • Jump in from poolside safely
  • Blow bubbles 3 times
  • Stand up from horizontal position on back no help
  • Stand up from horizontal position on front no help
  • Push and glide on back
  • Push and glide on front
  • Travel 5m on back with aids
  • Travel 5m on front with aids
  • Rotate from back to front and stand up
  • Rotate from front to back and stand up

Stage 3

A brief summary of the content of the award:

  • Jump in and submerge
  • Sink and push off the wall on side
  • Push and glide on front log roll onto back
  • Push and glide on back log roll onto front
  • Travel on front, tuck and rotate on horizontal axis and return on back
  • Fully submerge and pick up an object
  • Answer correctly 3 questions on water safety
  • Travel 10m on back
  • Travel 10m on front

Stage 4

A brief summary of the content of the award:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of buoyancy
  • Perform a tuck float
  • Perform sequence of changing shapes
  • Push and glide to pool floor
  • Kick 10m backstroke
  • Kick 10m front crawl
  • Kick 10m butterfly
  • Kick 10m breaststroke on back
  • Kick 10m breaststroke on front
  • Scull head first 5m
  • Travel on back roll onto front
  • Travel on front roll onto back
  • Swim 10m, stroke optional

Stage 5

A brief summary of the content of the award:

  • Perform a horizontal stationary scull
  • Scull feet first 5m
  • Perform a sculling sequence
  • Tread water for 30 seconds
  • Perform 3 different jumps
  • Swim 10m backstroke
  • Swim 10m front crawl face in water
  • Swim 10m breaststroke
  • Swim 10m butterfly
  • Perform a handstand
  • Perform a forward somersault
  • Demonstrate an action for getting help

Stage 6

A brief summary of the content of the award:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of preparation for exercise
  • Sink, push and glide, kick and rotate into backstroke
  • Sink, push and glide on side, kick and rotate into front crawl
  • Swim 10m with clothes on
  • Swim front crawl including six rhythmical breaths
  • Swim breaststroke including six rhythmical breaths
  • Swim butterfly including three rhythmical breaths
  • Swim 25m stroke optional
  • Perform shout and signal rescue
  • Perform a surface dive
  • Exit water without using steps

Stage 7

A brief summary of the content of the award:

  • Swim 25m backstroke
  • Swim 25m front crawl
  • Swim 25m breaststroke
  • Swim 25m butterfly
  • Perform movement sequence including sculling/rotation/floating/eggbeater
  • Swim 50m using one stroke
  • Swim 100m using a minimum of three different strokes
  • Tread water using eggbeater for 30 seconds
  • Complete an obstacle course
  • Perform a sitting dive

Competitive swimming technique proficiency

Award criteria:

  • Butterfly – Start, turn, finish and correct stroke technique.
  • Backstroke – Start, turn, finish and correct stroke technique.
  • Breaststroke – Start, turn, finish and correct stroke technique.
  • Front crawl – Start, turn, finish and correct stroke technique.
  • Individual Medley (IM) technique.
  • Racing dive.
  • The ability to explain all of the above.
